Winter Weddings: Why It’s A Great Time To Get married

The summer is traditional when choosing a date for your wedding, but have you ever considered how great the winter months would be for your big day? A winter wedding may not be your first thought, but you’ll be surprised at the many wonderful benefits of hosting your wedding during winter.

From enjoying crisp morning walks on our estate, to the cosy atmospheres you can create inside our historic hall and rustic barn as night falls outside, a winter wedding can be incredibly romantic.

And there are many other reasons why winter is a great time to get married including:

  • More Venue and Supplier Availability

  • No Humidity

  • Less Weather Stress

  • Seasonal Colour Palettes, Flowers and Decorations

  • Seasonal Menus

  • More Chance of Your Guests Attending

  • Great for Cosy Intimate Weddings

  • Winter Weather Benefits

  • More Affordable

More availability

As the majority of UK couples still see our summer as the ideal season to get married, it is known as ‘peak wedding season’, so most venues, suppliers and friends' calendars get booked up, sometimes years in advance. Hosting a winter wedding is one way to increase your chances of booking your dream wedding venue, and having an extensive choice of suppliers to choose from.

No humidity - better holding hair and makeup!

While the sun and warmth can be beautiful for outside weddings and sunny photos, we cannot deny that heat rarely does favours for good hair and makeup! No humidity means that flawless look you spent hours achieving is more likely to hold up all day and night long.

Less Weather Stress

If you’re already planning for an indoor wedding, then there’s no need for backup plans or a bulk purchase of umbrellas in case the weather is wet!

Seasonal colour pallets, flowers and decorations

Another benefit of winter weddings is the different variety of colours, florals and decorations that are in season. Think rich forest greens, deep navy or burgundy, all of which pair wonderfully with a floral display of green foliage.

Twinkling fairy lights and glowing candles also complement these greener displays well, along with more wooden decor.

Plus, in December (and often November for those more eager), venues also tend to add their own festive decorations to their spaces. We decorate a Christmas tree that takes pride of place in Bruisyard Hall over the festive period.

Seasonal Menus

It’s also a great time of year for a wedding if you’re thinking of a more formal banqueting style meal, or for comfort foods like a hearty roast dinner. And how about adding festive cocktails to the drinks menu or bringing out the mulled wine? Then you can finish off the evening with hot chocolates and s’mores by the fire pit to ward off the night’s chill.

More RSVPs

Typically people have fewer plans, and weddings to attend during the winter. Booking a wedding any time from January right through to March often means you have a higher chance of being able to welcome your full guest list.

Guests may also have an extra level of excitement for your big day as it’s something to look forward to during the quieter winter months

Great for cosy intimate hall weddings

Getting married in our historic country house is a cosy, romantic experience. Marry in our grand entrance hall or drawing room, then feast in our dining room.

Enjoy our grand hall’s roaring open fire, and memorable roast dinners prepared by our award-winning chefs

Early sunsets for darker evenings - means you can play with light in photography

With twilight falling earlier at this time of year, you can make great use of the darkness with fireworks, sparklers and even bonfires earlier on in the evening. Your photographer can also play with the unique light they create.

Weather

You may not immediately think so, but the winter weather offers some great opportunities for your wedding. The low sun is great for photos and if you’re really lucky you may even get a sprinkling of snow for the ultimate wedding shot!

More Affordable

By booking your wedding outside of the peak season, you may even find that suppliers and venues have seasonal offers and packages that better suit your wedding budget.
